Cricket tournament 2nd round - We won!

Sutton victorious again at cricket championship

On Thursday 11th June, Sutton CP cricketers traveled to Settle Cricket Club.  Having been successful in the first round of matches, spirits were high going into the second round of the School Games Kwik Cricket Championship.  Darcy, Nathan, Ben, Elliott, Elliot , Katy, Sonny and John from Years 5 and 6 were accompanied by Coach Baldwin, Assistant Coach Dywer, mums and dads.

The team first played Giggleswick, who had to content with excellent bowling in particular from Nathan and Ben.  The eight from Sutton finally won the game by 13 runs.

Up next were Bradley.  The match was another close run thing, in which both sides batted and fielded well.  Elliot and Sonny made superb catches and left Sutton with 192 runs to beat.  First to bat were Nathan and Elliot.  The pair were impressive, in their two overs Nathan reached the boundary for a four and Elliot for six.  Sutton enjoyed strong vocal support from the sidelines and there were cheers when a Sutton win was confirmed.  211 runs beating Bradley's 192.

Having two wins behind them, spirits were high going into the final game against Thresfield.  The side from Threshfield had yet to record a win.  It seemed like business as usual from Sutton with two amazing catches from Elliot and incredible interception by Sonny to prevent balls reaching the boundary.  However, two Threshfield players were able to find the gaps in Sutton's fielding and balls began to reach the boundary all too often.  Threshfield left Sutton with 226 runs to beat.

Sutton knew that every pair had to score well to win but immediately the batters faced difficult balls.  Despite this Elliot and Darcy fought back showing determination. Last to bat were Ben and Katy they communicated well to record a respectable rate of runs.  Both teams knew it was going to be close.  A win for Sutton would have meant they went onto represent Craven in the Yorkshire Championships.  So there was disappointment in the Sutton camp when a narrow victory for Threshfield was announced.  Threshfield winning by three runs, 226 to Sutton's 223.

Each of the four teams waited patiently whilst the details of each match were considered to decide the overall winner.  The atmosphere was tense as the officials reported it was three way tie in first place between Threshfield, Bradley and Sutton.  Deciding the winner was to be the number of wickets taken by each team.  Sutton had taken 19 wickets that afternoon and was enough to win.  They received medals and T shirts as well as retaining the trophy.  Sutton now have the honour of representing Craven in the North Yorkshire Schools Final to be held at York Cricket Ground  in two weeks time.
