Y6 go to Bewerley Park Autumn 2013

Monday morning

We're off!  Bags have been packed, goodbyes have been said and we are looking forward to the week ahead.

Tuesday morning

It's Tuesday morning and we are waiting for breakfast.  Everyone has had some sleep, is up and keen to get going.  Yesterday we got a bit wet but had a lot of fun!  Mr Horton's group went on a treasure hunt and displayed some fantastic teamwork skills.  See them in action here: http://youtu.be/jzy9sIE_gPk.

Meanwhile Mrs Humphrey's group had a go at shelter building.   Then we came together for a walk through the spooky woods at night.  Today one group will be climbing at Brimham Rocks and the other will be scrambling up a gorge!

Tuesday evening

We've had another fun filled day.  Mr Horton's group scrambled and squeezed themselves around the rocks at Brimham and many fears were overcome.  The group thought carefully about how to travel safely across different terrain and how to get through tight spaces in the morning.  Then in the afternoon we slipped into harnesses and used ropes to climb enormous rocks!  See more here: http://youtu.be/QtPOI3gIclc

Mrs Humphrey's group donned wetsuits to explore a cave and a gorge in the morning.  Then back at the site conquered the obstacle course.  After yet more delicious food this evening we have learnt to orientate maps to find different points all over the Bewerley Park site in the dark!

Wednesday

Wednesday was wet!  So wet in fact that Mr Horton's group couldn't scramble up the gorge they wanted to.  We went to have a look but there was far too much water, so we explored the area and found interesting crystals around an old mine.

In the afternoon, back at Bewerley we helped each other to climb the high ropes, which included a leap through the air to a trapeze!  See James conquer his fears here: http://youtu.be/yihlOqG7EeA.  Then we zoomed down the zip wire, which all agreed was epic!  Mrs Humphrey's didn't escape the rain rain either but had a great day at Brimham Rocks, climbing and scrambling around the outcrops.

In the evening, before supper a brand new talent contest 'Bewerley's Got Talent' was held.  Acts included Ben the human beat box, James the bonkers and the Onesie Triplet.  Nico, Katie, Della and Cameron judged and all acts received high praise!

Thursday

At last the sun shone and whilst Mrs Humphrey's group canoed, Mr Horton and his group were busy building shelters.  Two impressive wood and leaf structures sprung up in the woods; a classic Ray Mearsesque shelter and a freestanding teepee.  This was followed by a hunt for dry wood for our camp fire and toasted marshmallows!

The canoeing (followed by extreme paddling) took place on a nearby pond.  We were two to a canoe so communication was vital especially when wanting to go in a straight line.  Year 6 impressed again, showing themselves to be as happy on the water as the ducks around them.

Friday

Before breakfast we stripped our beds and packed our bags.  All were keen to get home and tell everybody about our week away, but before the bus arrived we were able to squeeze in some final orienteering in woods nearby.  Then the bus arrived and we said our goodbyes and thanks to our instructors Dennis and Jill.  Arriving back at school during afternoon break was great!  We received a very warm welcome and felt a bit like pop stars!
