Remembrance, Reconciliation and Forgiveness Week 2014

Poppies for Remembrance wb 10 Nov 14

We  had a truly memorable week in school with much of the week being themed around ‘Reconciliation, Remembrance and Forgiveness’ - the culmination of our whole school theme of ‘Fallen Fields.’

Mon and Thursday

KS1 and Y4  took part drama workshops led by ‘One Day’ theatre company —World War 1

Tues 11 Nov

Many  children came to school dressed in red (for remembrance)

During the day the children  took part in reflective activities including workshops, prayer spaces and arts and crafts. Each session  was be led by a member of our staff or one of our regular assembly leaders. Rev Rob Harris came from Sutton Baptist Church, Dra-Ma from Buddahland in Keighley, Alison Ways from Cliks, Lauren and Joel from Skipton Baptist Church and Mrs Hornsby from Holy Family School in Keighley.

Children were in small, mixed age groups and were encouraged to think further about remembrance and forgiveness and built on a similar, very successful, event last year.

Our school joined children from Sutton CE and Glusburn School at the village war memorial in Sutton Park and laid a wreath at 11.00am during a short service of Remembrance led by Rev Tim Calow (St Thomas’ Church) and Rev Rob Harris (Sutton Baptist Church)  Their behaviour was impeccable and was commented on by lots of people.

During the afternoon we watched a national school assembly from the Tower of London with 925,726  other pupils from across the country. To complete the day we had a  formal unveiling of our own poppy art installation. The final poppy was planted by Mr Ralph Hodgson, Mrs Whitehead's (Y3 teacher)  dad, whose grand children come to our school. Mr Hodgson is the grandson of a World War 1 Soldier.

The week has been very moving and thought provoking for us all;

‘When I took part in the unknown warrior workshop I felt bewildered because I never knew this before. I felt happy and sad at the same time, it was like I discovered a new feeling.’ pupil

It made me think that everyone is special in their own way but when we all work together as a team it is incredible.’ Pupil

‘I was proud to say that I work at Sutton CP and proud of all our children. I feel privileged to work with such amazing teachers. Thank you xx’ Member of staff

It’s a very special place, full of very special people.’ Parent
