Shake, Rattle and Roll

On Monday 5th June, children from Sutton CP School and Kildwick Primary School where invited to a presentation by Dr Caroline Neuberg about volcanoes and earthquakes.

Dr Neuberg has worked closely with Kildwick, Sutton CP and other local schools through her work with the Ogden Trust. She is a Senior Lecturer at Leeds Trinity University and has been an enthusiastic promoter of geophysics and astronomy to many children and teachers over the last ten years.

Dr Neuberg shared with the children her experiences of visiting volcanoes around the world and her work in detecting earthquakes using seismometers.

The children were then challenged to use their enquiry and construction skills to build an earthquake proof building from dried spaghetti and marshmallows. The constructions were then tested on the ‘wobbly table’ to find a winner.

It was a fantastic morning and a great opportunity to meet such an inspiring scientist.
