Safeguarding your child online

Online Safety – Helping Your Child Navigate the Digital World

The internet is an amazing tool for learning, creativity, and staying connected. As children grow up in an increasingly digital world, it’s important that they feel confident and safe using the internet – not afraid of it.

At Sutton CP, we believe in showing children how to use the internet wisely, helping them to explore it safely while understanding the risks.

Useful Resources for Parents

You can find up-to-date guidance on keeping your child safe online – and how to report any concerns – from these recommended sites:

Understanding the Risks

Using devices like mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and games consoles can offer many benefits. However, it’s important to be aware of the potential risks too:

  • Online bullying

  • Seeing inappropriate images or videos, including violence or sexual content

  • Grooming – when someone tries to build a relationship with a child for exploitation or abuse

  • Lack of physical activity and reduced face-to-face interaction

What the Experts Say About Screen Time

Too much screen time can have a negative impact on children’s health and development. And although research is mixed, it does show that children with higher screen time are more likely to:

  • Eat less healthily

  • Experience lower mood

  • Struggle with sleep and fitness

  • Have lower educational outcomes

This is often because screen time replaces other activities like exercise, reading, sleeping, or social interaction.

Online Gaming Safety

Many children enjoy online gaming, but it’s important to be aware of who they’re talking to, what content they’re seeing, and how long they’re playing.
