Safeguarding at Sutton in Craven Community Primary School

At Sutton CP School, keeping our children safe is at the heart of everything we do.

We believe every child has the right to feel happy, safe and secure—so they can thrive in their learning and development. Safeguarding is central to our policies, practices and values, and we work closely with families, staff and the wider community to ensure every child is protected from harm.

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. All staff, visitors and volunteers play a vital role in keeping children safe.

We are committed to:
  • Ensuring that every pupil, whatever their background or needs, is safe and protected from harm.

  • Taking all concerns and allegations of abuse seriously and responding swiftly.

  • Making sure that all adults working or volunteering in school understand their responsibilities and know how to report concerns.

Who to Contact

If you have any concerns about a child’s wellbeing, please contact a member of our safeguarding team:

  • Mrs Anna Riley, Headteacher – Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)

  • Mr Mike Clayton, Deputy Headteacher – Deputy DSL

  • Miss Christa Baldwin, SENCO – Deputy DSL

  • Mr Stuart Barrick, Safeguarding Governor

Areas of Safeguarding

We take a whole-school approach to safeguarding, which includes:

Staff and Visitors

Everyone who comes into our school must sign in and wear an ID lanyard. All staff and volunteers undergo safeguarding checks and receive training to ensure they know how to recognise and report concerns. Visitors are provided with clear safeguarding guidance and referred to the latest government document, Keeping Children Safe in Education 2023.

Safer Recruitment

We follow strict recruitment procedures, including thorough background checks, to make sure that all adults working with our children are suitable and safe.

Children’s Behaviour

We encourage children to be Ready, Respectful, and Safe. These values are embedded in school life and help promote a kind, inclusive and responsible school culture.

Premises

Our school environment is regularly checked and maintained to ensure it is a safe and welcoming place for all children.

Curriculum

Through our curriculum and enrichment activities, children learn how to keep themselves safe, make informed choices, and know where to turn for help. We also welcome visits from local emergency services and child safety organisations like the NSPCC.

Online Safety

We know that the online world can be both exciting and challenging. That’s why e-safety is a key part of our curriculum. We teach children how to stay safe online and use robust filtering and monitoring systems in school. Our systems flag any activity that could be a cause for concern, so we can act quickly to keep children safe.

We also work closely with organisations like Safer Internet Day and the NSPCC to keep staff, children and families up to date.

To find out more, please see our [E-Safety Policy].

Outside School

We work closely with outside organisations to make sure children are safe during trips, events and activities beyond the school gates. We also take part in the Growing Up in North Yorkshire Survey to help us better support children and families.

Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy

All staff have up-to-date safeguarding training and understand how to spot and respond to:

  • Changes in a child’s behaviour or wellbeing

  • Signs of abuse or neglect

  • Comments from children that raise concern

Our staff know how to raise concerns confidentially and appropriately, in line with our Child Protection Policy and Keeping Children Safe in Education guidance.

Information Sharing

Information We Collect

To keep your child safe, we ask for key information when they join the school, including:

  • Emergency contacts

  • Medical needs or dietary requirements

  • Legal contact and parental responsibility information

We also ask for written consent for emergency medical treatment, should it ever be needed.

PARENTS AND CARERS MUST NOTIFY US IMMEDIATELY OF ANY CHANGES TO THESE DETAILS.

How we use your information is detailed in our [Data Protection and Privacy Policy].

Working with External Agencies

Who We May Work With

Sometimes we may need to work with other professionals to help keep children safe. This can include services such as:

  • Social care

  • Community police

  • Educational psychologists

  • CAMHS

  • SEND specialists

In some cases, we may need to speak with these agencies before discussing concerns with parents. This is always done with the child’s wellbeing as our top priority and follows local safeguarding procedures.

If you have a concern or a complaint about our safeguarding procedures, please request a copy of our Complaints Policy.

Other Important Safeguarding Information

Policy Reviews

Our safeguarding policies are reviewed at least once a year to reflect the latest guidance from the Department for Education and the North Yorkshire Safeguarding Children Partnership (NYSCP).

Prevent Duty

As part of our safeguarding commitment, we actively support the government’s Prevent Strategy, which aims to prevent young people from being drawn into extremism or radicalisation. Staff receive regular training to help them spot early warning signs and guide children to make safe, respectful and informed choices.

Operation Encompass

We are proud to be part of Operation Encompass, a nationwide partnership between schools and the police to support children who may be affected by domestic abuse. When police attend an incident involving a child at our school, they inform us before the start of the next school day so we can provide support quickly and sensitively.

Our Designated Safeguarding Lead has completed Operation Encompass Key Adult training and ensures all staff understand how to support affected children.

Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO)

To report concerns about a member of staff or volunteer, please contact the North Yorkshire Duty LADO on 01609 533080. Further information can be found on the NYSCP website.
